Living Future Certified

Our Salt Lake City headquarters, sustainably remodeled in 2010, earned LEED BD+C v3 and LEED EBOM v3 Platinum Certification by 2014. To further deepen our commitment to sustainability, we earned Living Future Petal Certification in 2024, leveraging regenerative design expertise from our Sacramento Living Building and tailoring it to the Wasatch Front context.

Design Features

Biophilic Design The innate human-nature connection is a design driver at Arch Nexus SLC, evident in the central courtyards that were cut into the existing structure. These courtyards provide a multitude of benefits to occupants in addition to daylight and quality views. The divider is a large scale operable folding window system, which allows occupants to open the office to nature. Occupants can hear and feel the breeze, sit below trees, and see birds without leaving the office.

Regenerative Water Design Utah’s precipitation collection regulations are among the most stringent in the nation as each parcel can only store a maximum of 2,500 gallons. LBC requires all non-potable end uses (e.g. irrigation) to be served by non-potable water sources. This severe storage limitation drove the project’s net positive water balance solution. The use of rainwater capture, treated greywater, and low flow water fixtures helped the project achieve the LBC Water Petal.

Regenerative Power Systems The national Energy Use Intensity (EUI) average is 95. Prior to the 2020 remodel the SLC office had an EUI of 57. The Living Building Challenge requires a building to achieve an EUI of 26. In pursuit of this, our office employed specific technologies such as Solatube skylights, LED lighting conversion, new daylighting courtyards, electric heat pump HVAC systems, and a new solar photovoltaic system on the roof and over the parking area provide a renewable energy source.

Building Re-Use Arch Nexus SLC was originally constructed in the 1950s. It was then renovated again by new owners in the 1970s, 80s, 90s, and then again in 2009 by Arch Nexus. It underwent its 8th renovation in 2020 in pursuit of the Living Building Challenge.

Open Office Environment Architectural Nexus’ open office design fosters collaboration, flexibility, and equal access to a variety of workspaces. With hoteling offices, quiet zones, and flexible seating, employees can choose the best environment for their work. This adaptable layout encourages teamwork while also supporting individual focus. Beyond workstations, the office includes amenities like a fully equipped gym and social gathering spaces, promoting well-being and engagement. Teams can easily come together in shared areas designed for creativity and innovation. Our workspace reflects the same human-centered, adaptable design principles we bring to our projects, creating an inspiring environment for collaboration and productivity.
